Which Industries Are Growing Fastest in 2026 (and How AI-Proof They Are)

We cross-referenced BLS growth projections through 2034 with our proprietary AI Stability scoring.

Definition

A “high-growth AI-proof” industry is one that BLS projects to expand employment faster than the national average through 2034, and that scores 70 or above on the DreamJobMatcher AI Stability Score. Growth alone is not enough: some growing industries (basic logistics, retail back-office) are growing while also being progressively automated. The dual lens separates durable growth from headline growth.

This analysis combines two public-domain inputs with one proprietary one. From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Projections program, we pull 2024 to 2034 industry employment growth rates and median wages. From O*NET, we pull the task taxonomies that drive our AI Stability score. The proprietary input is DreamJobMatcher’s four-dimensional AI Stability Score, documented at our PATH method reference and applied across our career assessment.

The directional findings align with the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025 and the OECD AI and labour markets program. Healthcare, professional services with high judgment density, and skilled construction trades dominate the durable-growth list. McKinsey’s Generative AI and the Future of Work in America reaches similar conclusions on the directional shift, while emphasizing that the within-industry pattern (which roles inside a growing industry survive) is as important as the between-industry pattern.

Methodology in one paragraph

We applied a two-axis filter to every industry tracked in BLS Employment Projections. Axis one: BLS-projected 2024 to 2034 employment growth percentage. Axis two: weighted-average AI Stability Score across the occupations that make up that industry, with weights set by current employment share. Industries with growth above the national average (about 4%) and AI Stability above 70 land in the “durable growth” zone. Industries growing but scoring 30 to 50 land in the “growing but vulnerable” zone. Industries shrinking and scoring under 30 land in the “avoid” zone. The 10 fastest-growing industries through 2034

The table below ranks the 10 industries with the highest BLS-projected employment growth for the 2024 to 2034 decade. AI Stability is the weighted average across the industry’s largest occupations. Median wage is BLS 2023 data, the most recent full-year set published. Holland Code overlap shows the RIASEC types that dominate the industry’s largest roles. Read the table with the dual lens. Renewable-energy installation ranks second among all occupations for projected growth at +37% over the 2025 to 2035 decade, behind nurse practitioners at +41%, with a high stability score because the work is physical, code-bound, and customer-facing. Cybersecurity grows at +33% and scores 72 on stability because while the field uses extensive AI tooling, the regulatory and judgment-heavy senior roles remain accountable humans. Home health care grows at +21% with one of the highest stability scores because the in-home, trust-based, hands-on work has very low task decomposability. These three industries are the archetypes of durable growth.

What is missing from this list matters. “Software publishing” is growing fast on BLS projections but is internally splitting: senior architecture and security roles score 70+, while junior implementation roles score 25 to 30. The headline number hides the bifurcation. The same is true of “professional services”: senior advisory grows, junior research collapses.

Industries that are BOTH high-growth AND AI-resistant

The intersection of growth and durability is small. Four industry clusters meet both bars cleanly. Each is described below with the dimensions that drive its score and the occupations inside it that lead our 25 most AI-resistant careers of 2026 ranking.

Healthcare and social assistance

BLS projects +9% employment growth for the sector overall through 2034, with the mental-health, home-health, and outpatient sub-sectors growing at +12% to +21%. AI Stability runs 80 to 94 across the dominant occupations (registered nurses, mental health counselors, physical therapists, social workers, home health aides). The driver dimensions are interpersonal density, regulatory complexity, and physical presence. Most occupations in this sector require licensure, in-person assessment, and trust building that cannot be unbundled into discrete automatable tasks. Skilled construction trades and renewable-energy installation

BLS now projects +37% for solar photovoltaic installers and +30% for wind turbine service technicians in its 2025 to 2035 Occupational Outlook Handbook projections, revised down from the figures it published for the previous decade, driven by Inflation Reduction Act incentives, building electrification, and aging-grid replacement. AI Stability runs 80 to 87 for electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and solar installers. The driver dimensions are physical presence, on-site judgment, and code compliance. Professional and business services (high-skill subsegments)

The aggregate sector grows +10% through 2034 on BLS projections, but the within-sector split is sharp. High-skill subsegments (management consulting, civil engineering, environmental services, specialized legal and tax work, applied research) score 72 to 84 on stability because the work is judgment-heavy, often regulated, and accountable. The low-skill subsegments inside the same sector (junior paralegals, basic bookkeeping, junior market research) score 22 to 30 and are the most exposed segment of the broader services industry. Educational services (special ed, early childhood, STEM)

BLS projects +1% to +4% for educational services overall, modest at the headline level. The within-sector picture is stronger: special education teachers (+0.5% but stable wages and high durability), early childhood (+4% with high interpersonal density), and STEM-licensed K-12 (+3% with chronic shortages) all score 78 to 89 on AI Stability. Industries that are growing BUT AI-vulnerable

The most dangerous category for career choice is the one where surface growth masks structural exposure. The three industries below are projected to grow on BLS metrics, but the modal job inside each is being progressively automated. Picking these sectors without picking the right role variant is the most common mistake we see in our 2026 user data.

Retail and consumer-facing operations (back-office layer)

Retail trade is projected roughly flat through 2034 on a headline basis, but online retail and warehousing grow while traditional retail contracts. The back-office layer (cashiering, basic inventory clerking, customer service tier 1) scores 18 to 28 on AI Stability. Voice AI handles tier-1 inquiries; checkout self-service is standard; inventory management is increasingly model-driven. The store-floor experiential roles (in-person sales of high-consideration goods, specialty retail) score higher (45 to 60) but represent a small share. Food service back-office and quick-service kitchens

Food service grows +3% through 2034 on BLS projections, but the growth is concentrated in front-of-house and specialty culinary, not in back-office or fast-casual kitchens where automation is most aggressive. Order-taking, drive-through voice AI, robotic frying and beverage assembly are deployed at scale by 2026. Roles that score under 30 on AI Stability inside this sector include order takers, line-cook duplicators, and quick-service shift leads who supervise repetitive tasks. The chef, sommelier, and front-of-house manager roles score higher (55 to 70) because of interpersonal density and judgment.

Basic logistics and warehouse operations

Warehousing and storage is projected to grow +5% through 2034, but the growth masks intra-sector automation. Pick-and-pack roles score 22 to 28 on AI Stability as robotics and computer-vision sorting roll out at major operators. Last-mile delivery (especially in dense urban cores) is partially exposed via drones and autonomous vehicles, though the timeline is contested. Specialized logistics (hazmat, oversize, cold-chain veterinary, medical courier) score higher (55 to 68) because of regulatory complexity. Read this sector as automation-positive at the operator level and exposed at the individual-worker level.

Industries that are SHRINKING and AI-vulnerable (avoid list)

Some sectors compound both risks: declining or stagnant employment on BLS projections, plus low AI Stability scores. These are the worst sectors to enter as a primary career bet in 2026. The list is not a doom forecast for incumbents (transitions are always possible), but a warning against entering these fields fresh expecting a 30-year arc.

Print media production and traditional publishing operations

BLS projects continued contraction in print-publication production roles through 2034. The roles inside (junior copyediting, layout production, prepress) score 18 to 28 on AI Stability. The category combines a shrinking aggregate market with deep automation exposure. Editorial leadership and investigative journalism are separate categories with higher durability but smaller absolute employment.

Telephone customer support (tier 1) and outbound telemarketing

Telephone-based customer support is shrinking on BLS projections as deflection-to-self-service and voice-AI tier-1 absorb volume. The remaining tier-1 telephone roles score 18 to 26 on AI Stability. Tier-2 and tier-3 (judgment-heavy escalations) are separate and durable, but the tier-1 base is the modal job and is the one that is being absorbed.

Routine office administration (general clerks, basic data entry)

BLS projects continued contraction in general office clerks and data-entry roles through 2034. AI Stability scores 12 to 22 across the cluster. This category was already shrinking pre-2023; LLM deployment accelerated the decline. The senior executive-assistant and specialized administrative-coordinator roles are separate categories that score higher (50 to 65) thanks to judgment and interpersonal density.

What this means for career choice in 2026

The dual-axis view changes the right question. The wrong question is “which industry should I enter for the best growth.” The right question is “which industry combines growth with durability, and which role variant inside that industry survives both lenses.” Three concrete implications:

First, the safest long-horizon bet is healthcare and social assistance broadly, plus skilled construction and renewable-energy installation. Second, professional services is a strong bet only if you enter through the high-skill, regulated, or judgment-heavy door. The same sector that produces durable management consulting and applied research also produces the most exposed junior research and paralegal roles. The sector is not the answer. The role variant is.

Third, growing industries are not automatically safe. Retail, food service, and basic logistics are projected to grow on BLS data while the modal worker inside them faces aggressive automation. Choosing one of these sectors without choosing the specialty, in-person, or management track is a common mistake. How we scored AI Stability across industries

Each industry’s score is the employment-weighted average of the AI Stability Scores of the occupations that constitute it. Per-occupation AI Stability is computed on four dimensions, each weighted 25%: task decomposability, judgment load, human interaction density, and regulatory complexity. Inputs come from O*NET task taxonomies, BLS employment projections, and a 2024 to 2026 review of public AI deployment cases for each occupation. Two modifiers adjust the raw score: a labor-market multiplier reflecting BLS-projected employment change, and a deployment-evidence modifier reflecting whether observed cases use AI for augmentation or substitution in that role.

The four-dimensional approach is documented in detail at our PATH method reference. Why do you weight occupations inside industries instead of using a top-down sector score?

Because the within-industry variance is often larger than the between-industry variance. Professional services contains both highly durable management consulting and highly exposed junior research. A top-down score hides the bifurcation. Weighted aggregation surfaces it.

Are AI Stability Scores for industries comparable to those for individual roles?

Yes, both are on the 0 to 100 scale. Industry scores are derived from role scores using employment-weighted averaging. A reader comparing an industry at 78 to a role at 92 should understand the role is more durable than the industry’s average, which usually means the role is one of the durable subsegments inside the industry.

Which sectors grew the fastest in 2024 and 2025 that you would still avoid?

Several sub-sectors of business-process outsourcing grew through 2024 to 2025 on top-line revenue but contracted on headcount as AI absorbed work. Junior creative services (junior copywriting, basic graphic production) also grew on volume but lost employment per dollar of revenue. We treat both as growth-trap categories.
